JOB SUMMARY:

 

Provides retail pharmacy services (prescriptions, counseling, and over the counter).  Consults with staff and patients as requested.

II.    JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

 

A.     PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (essential functions as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act)

 

       1.     Demonstrates technical and professional competence in high risk procedures as

              listed in the department/unit Employee Development book.

 

       2.     For designated employees: Applies knowledge of various developmental stages in

              the planning and implementation of care for each patient/client/resident. Refer

              to "Age-Specific Knowledge and Skills" in the Addendum.

       GENERAL

 

       3.     Maintains current Missouri Pharmacist License and Picture in department.

 

       4.     Fills prescriptions as required.

 

5.     Prepares employee prescriptions including filling, labeling, pricing and labeling information.

 

       6.     Understands policies and procedures for prescriptions, documentation and filing.

 

7.     Reads and interprets all physician orders, clarifies questionable orders and dosages, screens for potential drug allergies and interactions, and processes approved orders.

 

       8.     Checks all work done by pharmacy technicians or interns for accuracy.

 

9.     Oversees filling the order and makes a final check for accuracy prior to delivery to the patient.

 

       10.    Advises patients on medications.

 

       11.    Dispenses over-the-counter medications.

 

12.    Receives payment and prepares forms for prescription transactions including charge cards, checks, cash and worker's compensation.

 

       13.    Processes billing to patients and third party payors.

 

       14.    Ensures appropriate delivery and exchange of medication cassettes.

 

       15.    Reconciles cash drawer.

 

16.    Coordinates activities with other staff members to facilitate efficient and timely delivery and distribution of prescriptions.

 

       17.    Participates in the department quality management program as requested.

 

       COMPUTER

 

       18.    Manages patient profiles as required.

 

       19.    Verifies technician orders in the computer system.

 

       20.    Enters new prescription orders in the computer system.

 

       21.    Generates canned labels as required.

 

       22.    Retrieves and prints patient teaching monographs and drug information.

 

       23.    Maintains HIPAA compliance.

 

24.    Debits and credits medications, duplicates labels and performs charge entry into the computer system.

 

       NARCOTICS

 

25.    Dispenses narcotics to patients as required. Fills all controlled substance        prescriptions or requests according to policy.

 

26.    Understands security requirements for controlled substances and narcotic lock     changing procedures.

 

       27.    Conducts narcotic audits, reconciliation and reporting.

 

28.    Checks in controlled substances, handles/discards outdated, broken or used narcotics per policy.

 

       EDUCATION

 

29.    Completes an annual educational presentation for the department on a current      healthcare topic.

       ADMINISTRATIVE

 

1.     Assists with performance evaluation of pharmacy technicians and interns when      requested.

 

       STOCK

 

       2.     Assists the Manager in determining necessary stock levels.

 

       3.     Borrows and lends medications as required according to policy.

 

       4.     Prepares basic stock solutions.

 

       5.     Receives shipments to the pharmacy, processing associated paper work.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

·         Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy

·         Other:  Continuing education as required by the Missouri State Board of Pharmacy

             

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

 

·         1 year in retail pharmacy preferred; may include internship or equivalent experience.

·         Detailed knowledge of pharmaceuticals.

·         Working knowledge of pathophysiology.

·         Detailed knowledge of pharmacology.

·         Detailed knowledge of drug preparation and packaging techniques.

·         Basic knowledge of retail operations.

·         Knowledge of pharmaceutical law.

·         Ability to function effectively in a busy environment during heavy peak load periods.

·         Ability to maintain knowledge levels at current state of practice.

·         Ability to maintain accuracy during variations in work intensity.

·         Flexibility in applying priorities.

·         Ability to interact with varied professional disciplines.

·         Ability to assume pseudo-supervisory responsibility with limited authority.

·         Ability to apply intricate legal controls.
